ATSE brand, design & campaigns

The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (also known as ATSE), as part of a 3-year “going public” Communications Plan, wanted to rename itself “Applied,” with a significant rebrand and a new “public-focused website” featuring all-new content, including STEM-focused stories via new podcasts, videos, an updated print magazine and a new public e-newsletter "TechKnow".
There was also a separate “member-only” website with member-only content.

Graphic Design
The original “Applied” visual brand and style was created by Truly Deeply Studio (TD). They created the original style guide and initial logos.
I led the branding refresh project as the 'in-house' designer and manager of Digital when they decided to rename it to "Applied".

Truly Deeply Studio created the “reporting outputs” and stationery/office templates (in InDesign, Word, and PowerPoint). Staff found the templates could not be used or had “issues”, were missing details, or did not function correctly. We also found the style guide didn’t work in some digital outputs such as PowerPoint. Our new web digital agency, Liquorice, also had some issues that needed to be resolved. Working with internal teams, I problem-solved & made significant changes (modifications & fixes and new templates) for all types of outputs and uses (including alternative logo outputs and colours). See examples below.

Magazine design and photography selection
The STEM industry magazine “Focus” was rebranded as “Applied”. After Mosaic Studios’ magazine publisher's front-page concepts were rejected, I created five new designs, and the semi-transparent shape concept (similar to my REIV magazine work) was selected. I designed the first cover, masthead, and a postage-paid fly sheet template with promo ad space and a change-of-address form. See image below of the first cover and a postage-paid fly sheet template.

Other templates, events and launches
I also created new artwork for

  • e-news templates for MailChimp (both for members/fellows and general public, including new TechKnow e-newsletter

  • Magazine ads for events and TechKnow e-newsletter

  • Membership card mockups

  • Print booklets and other print artwork

  • Logos and animated GIF animations for multipal uses

  • Eventbrite event banners and

  • Large printed event pull-up banners.

New website, digital design style and new Applied name go live
I wrote the new public-focused website brief, marketing personas (who our target groups were), the original IA (website structure), and organised the closed tender, which was won by digital agency Liqurice. They created a brand-new digital style that played with the logo's shape.
I also coordinated the name changeover day, where our new Applied website went live, and all staff emails changed to the new "Applied brand".

They built a new WordPress website that allowed us to promote news, events, and rich content, such as the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing, which a Fellow of the Academy worked on, and major campaigns such as the 2019 federal election and the release of a two-year report into Australia’s future transport needs (called Shifting Gears: Preparing for a Transport Revolution).

For the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing on July 20, 2019, I used 1960s NASA footage to create a video background of the moon.
