Working with Jane Krokos (COVID-19 Guidance Team) we looked at not only the page structure but also the structure of the website itself (both the information architecture and common user journey’s).
In response to user feedback, we wanted to make it easier & faster for small business users to find the relevant information & rules that applied to them.
We did this by
- naming our pages better with language that more closely matched what our end users used,
- having fewer landing pages and
- we tried to simplify the structure, but also be adaptable for where there was major changes. Adding a second How we work page: Regional Victoria when needed.
- To get the correct plain language, I looked at Google Trends (compared the popularity of different words) We tried to use words that the “real world” used and remove government definitions, acronyms and lawyer copy/speak. We also considered ‘culturally and linguistically diverse’ (CALD) audiences in our naming of pages and in file attachments to pages.
